Deposit, booking & payment

1

A commission is confirmed once the agreed deposit has been received.

The deposit reserves time in my schedule and contributes towards materials and preparation. The remaining balance is due once the artwork is complete and before collection, delivery or shipping. Payment should be made by bank transfer unless otherwise agreed.

If significant changes are requested outside the originally agreed scope, an additional charge may apply. Any additional costs will be agreed before further work is undertaken.

Reference images

2

Where a commission is created from photographs, suitable reference images must be provided before the commission is confirmed. I may ask for alternative photographs if the images supplied are too blurred, low-resolution, poorly lit, heavily filtered, or otherwise unsuitable for producing the agreed artwork. If suitable reference material cannot be provided, I reserve the right not to proceed with the commission.

Copyright and reproduction

Commissioned artworks are created in my own artistic style and will not be exact photographic reproductions.

The client acknowledges that variations in mark-making, tone, composition and detail form part of the handmade nature of the work.

The main composition, reference image and key requirements will be agreed before work begins.

Minor reasonable changes may be discussed during the process where appropriate. Significant changes requested after work has started may incur an additional fee.

Once the artwork is substantially complete, major changes or a complete redesign may not be possible.

Agreement

I will provide an estimated completion date before the commission begins.

While I will make every effort to meet this timeframe, commissioned artworks are handmade and completion dates may occasionally need to change. I will let the client know as soon as possible if this happens.

If the artwork is required for a specific event or gift date, this should be agreed before the deposit is paid.

If the client cancels after work has begun, the deposit will normally be retained to cover time, materials and the reserved commission slot.

If I am unable to complete the commission for any reason, any payments made for unfinished work will be refunded.

Framing is not included unless specifically stated in the commission agreement or invoice.

Where framing is arranged by me, the frame specification and any additional cost will be agreed with the client before ordering.

Local delivery or shipping arrangements will be agreed separately.

Any delivery, postage, packaging or courier charges will be confirmed before the final payment is made.

Artwork will be packaged carefully for delivery or shipping.

If artwork arrives damaged, the client should contact me as soon as possible and provide photographs of the packaging and artwork so that the issue can be assessed.

If a commission is intended as a surprise gift, please let me know. I will avoid sharing images of the work publicly before the agreed date.

Reference photographs and personal information supplied for a commission will only be used for the purpose of creating and administering the artwork. Where the subject is a child, I will take particular care not to publish the reference photographs or finished artwork without the client’s explicit permission.

I may wish to photograph completed commissions for my portfolio, website, exhibitions or social media, but I will only publish identifiable commissioned portraits where permission has been given.

Copyright remains with the artist after the physical artwork has been sold.

The client owns the physical artwork but may not reproduce, commercially use or sell reproductions of the image without written permission.

I retain the right to photograph and reproduce the artwork for my portfolio, website, social media, exhibitions and promotional materials, unless otherwise agreed in writing.

Payment of the deposit confirms that the client has agreed to the commission details and these terms.
